Can you spell i-r-r-e-s-i-s-t-i-b-l-e? In this 2005 Tony Award-winning musical, six puberty-stricken middle-school kids (and 4 guest contestants from the audience) compete for the title of Spelling Bee champion. The script and score are “riotously funny and remarkably ingenious” (New York Times) but also poignant and inspiring, shining a spotlight on issues of winning and losing, self-esteem, friendship, and the need for love and approval. Chip, last year’s champion, fights to maintain his title while under siege from his own hormones. William’s technique is to spell the word out with his feet. Marcy excels at everything and enjoys nothing. Olive’s mother is in an ashram seeking enlightenment and her father’s too busy to come to the Bee. Logainne is on her way to becoming the first female President of America. Leaf makes clothes for cats.
"That rarity of rarities – a super-smart show that is also a bona fide crowd-pleaser.
